Condensation - An Unwanted Phenomenon
1/27/2016 (Permalink)
Condensation is the change of water from its gaseous form into liquid water when it comes into contact with a cooler solid surface. This cooling of the warm air causes the air to lose its capacity to hold water vapor. Consequently, the excess water vapor condenses to form water droplets. The warmer the air, the more moisture it can store.
Inside a building, condensation is an unwanted phenomenon. The dampness may cause wood rot, corrosion, weakening of concrete or cement walls and mold. To alleviate these issues, air circulation needs to be improved and the indoor air humidity lowered. Normal everyday things like steaming hot showers, hanging wet clothes indoors or boiling a pot of water with the lid off can contribute to excess moisture in the air.
The photo below shows how much moisture occurs inside a home once a water disaster has occurred. The inside warmer air collides with the colder outside air causing water droplets (condensation) to gather inside on the glass of a mirror. The water disaster occurred from a burst water line in the baseboard heating system.
